Grand Opening Ceremony for Caboose No. 5759

Caboose 5759 has come full circle since its beginnings in 1963.  Its service area began between Richmond, Virginia and Birmingham, Alabama and primarily was staffed by crews  of men working on the railroad from Abbeville during the first five years.  The service area for Caboose No. 5759  expanded several times due to mergers of the railroad systems. What was thought to be its final resting place took place in May of 1994 when it was brought to Abbeville in grand style and placed at the Abbeville Depot.  As fate would have it, the depot was closed and the caboose was left idle.

Thanks to a number of concerns folks, work to preserve this piece of history continued behind the scenes and culminated with the moving of the caboose to the Abbeville County Historical Society Headquarters on December 3, 2013.  Since then, twelve retired railroad men have spent a great deal of their time giving the caboose a new face lift and constructing a beautiful display platform. In the near future a wrought iron fence will also be added to further enhance its beauty.

On Sunday, September 14th, 2014 at 3 pm, the caboose will be reopened.   Everyone is invited to this Grand Opening Ceremony at the ACHS Headquarters, which is located in the McGowan-Barksdale Bundy House at 305 North Main Street, Abbeville, South Carolina.  Tours will  be given to all who wish to view the interior of the caboose. Visitors are also encouraged to tour the McGowan-Barksdale Bundy House and the Seaboard Coastline Railroad Room inside the house.
